I had a similar thing happen last year. I was in a sporting goods store, buying stuff for DD's t-ball team. I needed to find the t-ball helmets, and after much searching, found 4 helmets. 3 were pink, one was blue. I reached for the blue one at the same time another guy did. We laughed, said excuse me, and verified that each was indeed after the blue helment. The guy said that his son was starting next week. I said my daughter was too. "Oh, you have a girl...then you should get the pink helmet!" he said, relieved. I said, well, blue is her favorite color and I know she would want the blue one. We hemmed and hawed a little, but I ended up backing down, and in the end, he was very nice about the whole thing. I was glad that I at least said that he shouldn't assume that the girl had to have pink! Tho I can see from his point of view, there was probably no way his son was setting foot on a t-ball field in a pink helmet!
